Reciprocating Saw User Safety Tips

In this article I will discuss several safety tips you will need to know when using your reciprocating saw. Pratice these rules and you will use your power tool in a safe and productive way.

1) Before operating any power tool, take some time to thoroughly read the owner’s manual. Always make sure to familiarize yourself with hazards and recommended operational procedures.

2) Make sure the blade guarded is mounted securely and never removed.

3) If the handle of the saw is broken or cracked, do not use it. Remember, electrical shock could occur if you touch anything metal that is grounded.

4) Do not use your reciprocal saw if you or saw are wet or while standing on a damp or wet surface.

5) Make sure to always wear goggles or safety glasses.

6) Keep children and pets away from all power tools.

7) Always Protect your cord. Don’t yank on it to disconnect it from an outlet, and keep it away from heat.

8) If an extension cord is needed for use, verify that it is heavy enough to carry the current your reciprocating saw will use. You can find this information contained within the specifications section of your owner’s manual. A smaller gauge number will indicate a heavier cord. If you’re using your reciprocating saw outside, always make sure your extension cord is approved for outdoor use. It will be marked with a suffix of W-A.

9) Always replace extension cords at any sign of damage; inspect frequently.

10) Maintain a safe distance between the cord and the machine when you’re operating the saw.

11) When holding the saw, only use the provided gripping areas. Grabbing it by the front metal parts may and can result in electrical shock if you accidentally cut into live electrical wires when sawing into floors or walls.

12) As with any motor, be sure to operate away from fumes, gases, and any flammable liquids.

13) Always ensure the switch is turned off before you turn the tool on. Never carry your tool in a careless manner with your finger on the switch trigger.

14) Only use the blades specified to be used with your tool.

15) Be sure to have stable, secure footing.

16) When possible always use clamps to hold pieces of work stationary.

17) Be sure to press the shoe firmly against the material that you’re cutting, especially if it’s a hard material like metal. If you don’t, the blade can catch in the work piece, and you may find
yourself reciprocating instead of the reciprocating saw blade.

18) Keep your hands away from the material you are cutting. Do not reach under your work while the blade is moving.

19) When the saw is not in use, always disconnect the unit from its power source.

20) Do not use brake fluids, gasoline, brake fluids, strong solvents, or petroleum-based products to clean your saw. Simply using a clean cloth when cleaning will keep the handles dry and avoid a buildup of grease and oil on your unit.

21) Never treat your power tool as a toy, always use safely and your saw will last for years to come.
